She Thought I Used Her and Dumped Her…But We Were Never Dating
by Chiemelie Kyrian Offor · Writer
A widow’s unexpected message after seeing me with a female friend revealed a heartbreaking misunderstanding that left me completely speechless.

It was shocking when she said this to me.
This lady in my former place, I stayed.
Some years back.
Who owns a grocery store.
And also bakes and sells snacks, cakes.
All sorts.
A widow.
And mother of three.
I used to be her customer.
And most of the time when I bought something, she would give me some discounts.
Sometimes she would tell me not to bother about payment.
I would insist.
Yet she wouldn't budge to take any dime from me.
So one day I asked.
"Why do you always do this? You don't collect money from me when I buy something from you?"
She would laugh and say.
"Aah nothing, you are my customer. I am just touched to do it."
"Is that how you treat your other customers?"
"Noo. Just you o."
"Really?"
"Yes. You have this amazing character, very humble, and most importantly you are cool-headed. Nothing else honestly."
"Thank you so much."
So I left.
She continued with her generosity.
At some point, I became uncomfortable with it so I avoided patronizing her.
But when I walked past, she would scream from her store.
"My fine customer, good afternoon, sir. I have not been seeing you again o, did you travel?"
I smiled.
"Noo, I have been around."
"Really? You no longer buy things from me."
"My apologies, it's a tight schedule for me now. Most of the time I spend my days on the island."
So one day I needed to get some items urgently, so I had no choice but to patronize her since her store was close to my place.
For all the items I bought, she refused to collect money from me.
I insisted.
To no avail.
I spent almost an hour convincing her to collect her payment.
She refused.
I didn't leave.
She simply said.
"You are just a nice person. I like you, nothing attached. Please don't pay, I have enough customers already."
I got tired and I thanked her and left.
So one day a friend of mine, came to see me.
She spent half of the day in my house.
While we worked on a project.
Towards evening, when she was ready to go back to her place.
I decided to see her off.
We passed this woman's shop, she was there with her kids.
When she saw us, I saw that look on her face, I greeted her, but she didn't say a word to me.
I honestly thought she didn't hear me.
After seeing my friend off at the bus stop, I decided to go pick up something at her shop.
She was still moody.
Out of curiosity, I asked her.
"Are you alright I hope everything is okay?"
She replied with a straight face.
"I am fine. What do you want to buy?"
These words came as though she had never met me before.
I coordinated myself with respect and told her what I wanted.
She packed all that for me and gave me a maximum price for the items.
I didn't mind, I brought out my card and paid.
I honestly didn't know what made her mood change, I wondered if I ever wronged her in any way but I knew I didn't.
When I got home.
Later that evening, I got a message from her.
That was when I was shocked.
She said.
"... so you have a girlfriend all this while? So today I saw you with your girlfriend, I know you didn't know I will see both of you. Upon everything I did for you, being so nice to you, this is how you paid me back? Because you think I am not on your level and I am a widow with three children you decided to use me and dump me. God will judge you, I blame myself I would have known from the begining that I wouldn't stand a chance with you but it's fine, I accept my heartbre.ak in peace..."
